Park clinches South Korea's first ever gold at swimming worlds

        

Park Tae Hwan surged in the last 50 meters on Sunday to win the first ever gold for South Korea at the World Championships.

In the men's 400 meters freestyle final, the 17-year-old Park didn't stage himself forward in the first 350 meters, but surprisingly dashed out from the fifth lane, winning the opening gold of the swimming session at three minutes and 44.30 seconds.

"We did not know what was going to happen. I just want to show everyone that I can get a gold medal," said Park after grabbing the first ever World Championships medal for South Korea.

Park said his idol was Australia's world and Olympic champion Grant Hackett. However, the defending champion managed a third place at 3:45.43, after struggling into the final as the eighth fastest qualifier.

Qussama Mellouli from Tunisia took the silver medal by clocking at 3:45.12.

Park burst onto the stage by winning seven medals, including three golds at the Doha Asian Games last year.

His winning time in Melbourne also smashed the Asian record of 3:45.72, which was set by himself at the Pan Pacific Championships last August.

Park could threat his idol Hackett again in the 800 meters and 1, 500 meters freestyle event
